The Goon Line 001: Gabe and Max's Internet Thing
Hey, bing bong. You got your emails.
Goon Good morning! Kicking off this experiment by sharing something from my deep personal archives — and that is, similar to this dumb newsletter, a weird love note to being online.
I first encountered Gabe and Max’s Internet Thing when Gawker shared it in October of 2007. I was working at a job I hated, and spending most of my days in deflated-tube position while I tried (and got damn close) to consume the entire internet.
This still makes me laugh so much. For years, my text message alert sound was "hey, bing bong, you got your emails." And I love telling people to fax me their email address, which is definitely a super accessible and hilarious reference to so, so, so many people.
The turn-of-the-millennium breed of humor that riffs on public access TV and low-budget advertisements and VHS recordings of TV programs on the SLP setting remains hilarious and nostalgic to me. And this one just rules at it. I’ve followed both of these creators throughout the years, and I continue to love their output, but GOOD GRIEF was their maiden voyage a spectacular one.
Bing bong, bye. See you tomorrow!
