The Goon Line 037: Thank God and Jimmy Buffett, a song by Pitbull

DALÉ with a shaker of salt

Much like how I’ve restrained myself re: not making this newsletter nothing but a catalog of medium-deep-cut showtunes, I have waited a staggering seven weeks to even whisper the name Armando Christian Pérez here. Today I lift that embargo with a song I will spend the rest of 2024 listening to with every available window open. HE WROTE A SONG ABOUT JIMMY BUFFETT.

My unexpected and enthusiastic Pitbull fandom started about a decade ago with one innocent workplace question: “If you could go on a road trip with Pitbull, where would you go?” That simple query ended up being one of those jokes that Pinocchio’ed itself into a real thing — since that utterance first escaped my lips I have spent dozens of hours and hundreds of dollars on things like buying Pitbull merch, making and distributing a Pitbull road trip calendar and seeing a Pitbull concert. (IT WAS INCREDIBLY FUN, 11/10 WOULD DO AGAIN.)

If you haven’t already thought about this, I want you to do so pretty seriously right now. Pitbull is such a joyful, ebullient character, and the idea of going on a road trip with this man while we experience some real quintessential Americana is something so special to me. Imagine how much fun he’d have at a barn raising! A pumpkin patch! Wine tasting in the Willamette Valley! I wanted and still want this to become a reality show. I even wrote a theme song for it, which I will sing for you in person sometime.

Here are some adventures we took together for the 2016 calendar. God, I really need to revisit this project for 2025.

Contemplative at Mt. Rushmore

Feeling a little serious at the amusement park (the lines were long that day)

Taking the Grand Canyon by storm

Dancing through a corn maze

He dressed seasonally for when we went to the pumpkin patch

ANYWAY, BACK TO THE INTERNET AT HAND. Because speaking of joyful spirits, who better to channel than late King of Fun Jimmy Buffett for a real double-hitter of exuberance? I have traveled to a medium-high amount of places in my life, and one of the most delightful hotel stays I have ever experienced was a night at Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville Hotel and Casino in Bossier City, Louisiana, when we were driving down to move me to Austin in 2017. Maybe that’s where Pitbull and I will start our road trip together.

So pump a lil party into your Tuesday, folks, as you THANK GOD AND JIMMY BUFFETT.
